Somewhere in your house — maybe a junk drawer, maybe a shoebox under the bed — there's probably a controller that still technically works, except for that one thing. The left stick drifts just enough to make your character walk in slow circles during cutscenes. The right trigger sticks on the pull. The rumble motor sounds like a dying ceiling fan. You've been meaning to fix it, but every time you look up what that actually costs, you quietly close the browser tab and move on with your life.

That cycle isn't accidental. And a lot of people in the gaming community are starting to get loud about it.

The Numbers That Make You Want to Flip a Table

Let's start with the math that gaming hardware companies would prefer you not spend too long thinking about.

A standard PlayStation 5 DualSense controller retails around $69.99. Sony's official out-of-warranty repair service — assuming you can even get them to take the controller — runs in the $50–$70 range depending on the issue, before shipping. An Xbox Wireless Controller sits around $59.99 new. Microsoft's repair pipeline is similarly priced, and that's before you factor in turnaround time, which can stretch to several weeks.

So you're looking at paying nearly the cost of a brand-new controller to fix your old one, plus the hassle of mailing it out, plus the wait. The economic "choice" being presented to you isn't really a choice at all. It's a nudge. A very expensive, very deliberate nudge toward the checkout page.

Third-party repair shops can sometimes undercut those prices — a thumbstick replacement might run $20–$35 at a local shop if you're lucky enough to have one nearby — but availability is inconsistent, warranty implications are murky, and the parts themselves aren't always easy to source because manufacturers don't exactly publish their component specs for public use.

Stick Drift: The Symptom Nobody Wants to Own

If there's one issue that crystallizes this whole conversation, it's analog stick drift. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con drift situation became so notorious that it spawned class action lawsuits and congressional attention. Nintendo eventually extended its free repair program under pressure, but the underlying hardware design that caused the problem? Still present in the original Joy-Con form factor for years after the issue became public knowledge.

Drift happens because the potentiometers inside analog sticks — the components that detect position — wear down with use. They're not exotic parts. They're not cutting-edge technology. They're small, relatively cheap components that degrade over time, and in many controllers they're soldered directly to the board in ways that make replacement tedious even for experienced repair techs.

The fix isn't complicated if you have the tools and the know-how. The problem is that manufacturers have made sure most people don't have either.

The Landfill Nobody's Talking About

Here's where the conversation stops being just about money and starts being about something bigger.

The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that Americans discard roughly 9.4 million tons of electronics annually. Gaming peripherals are a small slice of that, but they're a growing one. The global gaming controller market is projected to keep expanding through the late 2020s, and the average lifespan of a controller — factoring in drift, broken bumpers, and battery degradation — can be surprisingly short for heavy users.

Controllers contain circuit boards, lithium batteries, plastics, and trace metals. When they hit landfills, those materials don't just disappear. Battery leakage, plastic that takes centuries to break down, heavy metals leeching into soil — it's the same story we've heard with phones and laptops, except nobody's running major ad campaigns about responsible controller disposal.

Some manufacturers have made noise about sustainability commitments. Microsoft announced carbon-negative pledges. Sony has talked about reducing plastic in packaging. But the actual repairability of the hardware? That conversation is notably quieter.

Right to Repair Knocks on Gaming's Door

The right-to-repair movement has been gaining real traction in the US over the past few years. Several states have passed or are actively considering legislation that would require manufacturers to provide consumers and independent repair shops with access to parts, tools, and documentation. The FTC has issued policy statements supporting right-to-repair principles. President Biden signed an executive order in 2021 encouraging the FTC to address repair restrictions.

Most of the early energy in this space focused on smartphones, farm equipment, and medical devices. But gaming hardware is increasingly part of the conversation.

iFixit — the repair manual and parts platform that's become something of a folk hero in the DIY tech world — has been vocal about the repairability scores of gaming controllers. Spoiler: they're not great. Proprietary screws, components glued rather than clipped, and the general absence of official repair documentation all add up to hardware that's technically fixable but practically designed to discourage it.

Some indie repair advocates and modding communities have pushed back in their own way, producing teardown guides, sourcing replacement thumbstick modules, and sharing tutorials on YouTube that have racked up millions of views. The demand for this information is clearly there. The infrastructure to support it at scale, less so.

What Would Actually Help

Nobody's asking gaming companies to suddenly start operating like nonprofit cooperatives. But there are realistic, industry-viable steps that would meaningfully change the situation.

Publishing repair documentation and making replacement parts commercially available — even at a premium — would give consumers and third-party shops a legitimate path to fixing hardware without voiding warranties or guessing at specs. Modular design, where components like thumbsticks can be swapped without soldering, is technically feasible; the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller offers swappable stick modules, which is a step in the right direction even if the overall price point puts it out of reach for many players.

Extended warranty programs with transparent pricing would also help. Right now, the opacity around repair costs is part of what makes replacement feel like the only sensible option. If you knew upfront that a stick replacement would cost $15 and take five business days, you might make a different call.

The Playground Deserves Better Hardware

At JAOPG, we spend a lot of time celebrating what makes gaming great — the communities, the creativity, the shared experiences. But none of that happens without the hardware in your hands. And right now, that hardware is caught in a loop that benefits manufacturers far more than the people actually playing the games.

The controller graveyard keeps growing. Junk drawers fill up. Landfills get a little heavier. And somewhere in a product design meeting, somebody is looking at replacement rate data and feeling pretty good about the numbers.

That should bother us. Not enough to stop playing — but enough to keep the pressure on for something better.
